We would like to say a big THANK YOU for everyone’s support in the May 12th Run4Another. We surpassed our goal of $1,500 which we are very grateful for!!
We have been matched with a child in Uganda that your donation is going specifically to, to give her the treatment she needs to correct Injection Neuritis. Sandra is 12 years old. She was born with normal feet but when she was 8 yrs old she received an injection for malaria in her right hip. After that her right foot began to go lame and she’s been walking on a severely limited foot ever since. It might be hard to see from the photo but she walks on the ball of her foot and the achilles tendon is contracted meaning that she cannot touch her heel to the ground making walking very difficult.
This is an all too common condition caused by receiving an injection too close to the sciatic nerve. It is generally due to a poorly administered injection in rural health clinics. The toxicity from the malaria medication when injected at the nerve causes loss of nerve function to the lower limb. The correction for this condition is similar to clubfoot treatment but the results depend on the extent of the nerve damage.
One4Another has worked on dozens of kids with injection neuritis and have seen kids regain significant function and a normal walking gait through the following treatment:
● castings to stretch the achilles and soft tissues toward a more neutral position
● surgery to lengthen the achilles and transfer viable tendons to the top of the foot
● casting while the foot heals in a neutral corrected position
● braces which she’ll wear for walking support and to prevent recurrence
Thank you again for your support. It’s very much appreciated!
